New York City Marathon: How women broke into the race 50 years ago

Kathrine Switzer is probably greatest recognized for her barrier-breaking run in 1967, when she grew to become the first lady to formally end the Boston Marathon, regardless of an official’s try and push her out of the 26.2-mile race.

However Switzer says that a few of her most joyful runs—and her best victory—have are available in New York. A longtime New York resident who has logged hundreds of miles on the metropolis’s streets, Switzer received the New York City Marathon in 1974 and continues to be the final New York resident to win the metropolis’s signature race.
