Eight police officers injured in clashes with protesters in Parliament Square | Protest

Eight police officers have been injured after clashing with a whole bunch of anti-establishment protesters in Parliament Square on Bonfire Evening.

Demonstrators carrying Man Fawkes-style masks had gathered at close by Trafalgar Square on the annual Million Masks March with some throwing fireworks at officers.

Footage posted on Twitter confirmed protesters at Parliament Square the place they have been pushed again by a line of officers carrying protecting gear.

An effigy of Boris Johnson was burned whereas most of the demonstrators participating in the occasion held indicators protesting in opposition to the coronavirus lockdown.

The Metropolitan police stated 12 arrests have been made. It wrote on Twitter: “A complete of 12 arrests have been made whereas policing tonight’s demonstrations throughout London. These arrests have been for a wide range of offences. Eight of our officers have been injured. That is unacceptable.

“The policing operation will proceed into the night.”

The Met stated earlier a bit 35 dispersal order is in place for “quite a few areas” throughout Westminster, together with Parliament Square. The drive stated: “Officers are participating with these in Parliament Square and shall be advising them of this order.”

In a separate tweet, the Met stated a crowd in Parliament Square had been “dangerously lighting fireworks and rockets”.

It added: “Some have struck folks or exploded close to to the group, this might trigger very severe damage. We’ve moved into the group to take away any fireworks and stop folks [from] coming to hurt.”

One participant, who gave his title solely as Richard, from London, stated the protest, which has taken place on 5 November for a number of years, was a “continuation” of the “anti-Covid” marches.

“It’s principally a continuation of the anti-Covid marches that we’ve been on because the starting of the 12 months,” he stated. “It’s a few fingers in the route of the institution.”

Forward of the demonstration, the Met stated officers would work intently with protest teams to “guarantee gatherings are secure and dysfunction is minimised”.

Final 12 months, nearly 200 folks have been arrested throughout the protest for breaching lockdown restrictions.
