Ashling Murphy: vigils to be held across Ireland for teacher killed going for run | Ireland

Vigils are to be held in Ireland after the “mindless” killing of a 23-year-old teacher, with echoes of the nationwide reckoning that was sparked within the UK final 12 months by the homicide of Sarah Everard.

Ashling Murphy was killed on Wednesday afternoon whereas going for a run alongside the banks of the Grand Canal in Tullamore in County Offaly.

The killing has provoked an outpouring of grief on the island of Ireland and past, in addition to anger and revulsion at one other younger girl allegedly murdered whereas going about her enterprise in public.

Rallies and vigils will be staged across Ireland and the UK over the weekend, together with in Dublin, Limerick, Belfast, Derry and London, with 1000’s anticipated to attend. Senior politicians expressed their alarm and solidarity.

In London, a vigil will be held on the London Irish Centre in Camden City on Saturday at 4pm.

“My ideas tonight are with the household of the younger girl killed in a really stunning crime, along with her pals and along with her neighborhood,” Helen McEntee, Ireland’s minister for justice, tweeted. “The gardaí will examine this terrible crime and guarantee justice is finished.”
